Jennifer Beals: ‘You can never have enough stories about the queer community’

bout a decade ago, Jennifer Beals was approached in the street by two women in their sixties. They were a couple, and had been for decades, but had never come out to their families. That was, until they watched The L Word. Inspired by the game-changing lesbian drama series, they had finally gained the courage to live and love openly.

“I have to tell you,” says the show’s star, breaking into a grin, “as a straight, cisgender woman, to be able to give to a community that has taught me so much is really a tremendous pleasure. It’s always been incredibly moving for me. Meeting those women just drove home for me the power of storytelling, and how stories can change us and can lead us to action.”

Beals’ queer appeal began more than 30 years ago. In the first few minutes of Flashdance, amid the sparks, boiler suits and melodrama, the then 18-year-old emerges from beneath a welder’s helmet, shaking loose her curly hair and disrupting the harsh masculinity of the steel mill in which her character works. Her tenure as a lesbian icon has now stretched into its fourth decade, with The L Word rebooted in the form of Generation Q. Eleven years after the show’s original run ended, Beals reprises her role as high-powered gallerist Bette Porter, alongside fellow alumnae Leisha Hailey and Katherine Moennig and a new ensemble cast of lesbian, queer and trans characters.

As the new series begins, Bette is immersed in Los Angeles politics and bruised from a series of personal calamities. The show itself, meanwhile, is just as brilliantly erratic as its predecessor – deeply moving and funny, with a tendency to fly off the rails here and there. Nothing in the episodes provided for press has been quite as deranged as the original show’s 2009 final season, in which a notoriously loathed character ended up dead in a swimming pool – but it’s early days.

“Even within its imperfection, it was creating so much good,” Beals says of The L Word’s less refined elements. “Yes, it was entertaining, sometimes it was soapy and sometimes it was a bit of a romp, but there was always an element of truth to it. It had the ability to reflect back to a whole group of

Evangelicals should vote for Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren in 2020

In Upton Sinclair’s classic American novel The Jungle, the main character, Jurgis Rudkis, is a Lithuanian immigrant who has suffered endlessly working in Chicago’s meatpacking yards at the turn of the 20th century. After a series of devastating tragedies, Jurgis finds himself with a job at a hotel owned by a wealthy socialist and listening in on a speech being given about the Social Gospel. The speaker argues that not only was Jesus a socialist, he was the first socialist. Hearing these words, our protagonist is moved; he’s at peace knowing that he can be part of a socialist movement and still be a good Christian, because, as he learns, being a socialist is the pinnacle of what it means to be a true Christian.

In 2019, the income inequality level in the US hit a five-decade high. Over 28 million Americans don’t have healthcare presently, and just last week scientists moved the Doomsday Clock to 100 seconds to midnight – in part because of the threat the climate crisis poses to the survival of humanity. July’s Democratic convention is just five months away and many prominent white Protestant evangelicals have spent the length of the Democratic primary season proselytizing Truman-era propaganda of a socialist destruction that would befall America if a left-leaning candidate were to win the presidency – even though reforms like universal healthcare have been successfully implemented in other countries.

While black Protestant evangelicals have long disavowed white evangelical Republicans’ visions of social justice, and the NeverTrump evangelicals have spoken out against the current government since 2016, white evangelicals still make up a third of the Republican voting bloc. My father, a white evangelical and born-again Christian, is concerned about the US government taking a hard turn to the left if either Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders were to win the presidency. We couldn’t be further apart on politics and I don’t think it’s easy for either of us. As a family, we try to gently agree to disagree.

But I wasn’t raised religious. I learned about Christianity at the Catholic schools I grew up going to, and from members of different Christian faith communities. My earliest impressions of what Christianity was really about came from reading about Jesus’s rejection of ancient Rome’s inequitable, oppressive and violent status quo, from his humility, his vision of brotherhood and his kindness and loving dedication to the disenfranchised.

And the warnings about socialism aren’t really directed at my generation. When Republicans call Democrats “socialists”, they are speaking to baby boomers haunted by the memories of the Cold War. For my parents, the word “socialism” meant nuclear standoffs – a government war against democracy, freedom of press, expression, privacy, and religion.

But for millennials who grew up in a time where the Cold War was just a chapter in a history book, many of us associate the politics of social democracy with the best educational outcomes in the world, like in Finland, and free, accessible healthcare for everyone in France and the UK, countries which have better survival and disease prevention rates than the US and which don’t impinge on personal freedoms.

A couple weeks ago, I spoke with author and National Catholic Reporter’s news editor Peter Feuerherd about his work on the history of evangelicals and social justice movements in the US. He told me about several periods when Protestant evangelicals, in the broadest sense of the definition, advocated for faith-based socialist political models of government. There was the pre-civil war abolitionist movement that started in the 1830’s and grew out of Protestant evangelicalism. The Social Gospel movement flourished between 1870 and 1920 with adherents who advocated for improved conditions for factory workers and immigrants, ending child labor and other critical social improvements for poor and working class Americans. And then there was the Civil Rights movement of the 1950’s and ‘60’s, where biblical scripture formed the centerpiece of Dr Martin Luther King’s fight for justice for black people in this country.

At the time Jesus lived, illness, poverty and misfortune were considered rebukes from God. In contrast to that belief, his ministry sought out the forsaken and persecuted by speaking directly to them and to those who wielded influence over their lives – the Romans.

Trump impeachment: Pelosi expects public hearings to begin within weeks as inquiry deepens

Nancy Pelosi has said she expects public hearings in the impeachment inquiry against Donald Trump to start this month.

The Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives, who started the process which could see the president removed from power, told Bloomberg: “I would assume there would be public hearing in November.”

Mr Trump is accused of abusing his power to pressure the Ukrainian president to dig up or even fabricate political dirt on Joe Biden, one of the frontrunners to be the Democratic candidate in the 2020 election.

He denies doing anything wrong and has repeatedly described as “perfect” a phone call in which he asked Volodymyr Zelensky to do him a “favour” by investigating Mr Biden and his son Hunter, who sat on the board of a Ukrainian energy company.

Speaking at a roundtable event with reporters and editors at Bloomberg, Ms Pelosi said that the behind-closed-doors hearings that started last month would continue for as long as they are “productive”, saying the case against Mr Trump had to be “ironclad” if it is to proceed.

RECORD-BREAKER: 175,000 Requests For Tickets To Trump Rally In NJ ,Hundreds Camp Out In Cold [VIDEOS]

More than 175,000 tickets have been requested for President Donald Trump’s rally in Wildwood, New Jersey Tuesday night. That’s a record for any President Trump rally anywhere, the president’s daughter-in-law Lara said in a radio interview.

The Wildwoods Convention Center holds 7,500 people. Supporters have been camping out outside the venue since early Monday morning hoping to get a spot inside.

A Jumbotron will be set up outside to handle the overflow crowds.

Meanwhile, hundreds of people braved the cold, and were camped out overnight – many of them on the beach. The rally is taking place in New Jersey’s 2nd Congressional District, represented by Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew. Van Drew switched from the Democratic Party to the GOP in December 2019 and pledged his ‘undying support’ for President Trump.

Muslims Dressed like Cops now Driving fake Cop Cars Policing American Cities

Muslim in New York are now policing the city dressed like cops while driving fake cop cars.

Reports show that the cars from a Muslim group called the Muslim Community Patrol have been spotted around the city, joining the Jewish enclave’s Shomrim and the Brooklyn Asian Safety Patrol among New York’s culture-specific security groups.

The white Ford Taurus bears insignia nearly identical to those of an NYPD patrol car — with blue horizontal stripes down the sides, a shield on the front driver’s side door and the words “Muslim Community Patrol”.

Instead of NYPD spelled out on the front door, the vehicle has the letters MPC.

And in place of the CRM acronym on the rear doors, which stands for “Courtesy, Professionalism, Respect,” this car has MCP, writing “Muslim Community Patrol.”

Michelle Obama Brags: ‘Many’ Around the World Feel Barack Is ‘Their President’

How tone-deaf can she be?

Michelle Obama says people consider Barack to be “their president.”

This is a veiled swipe at President Trump and is a classless attempt at implying Trump isn’t considered the president to all Americans.

She could use a dose of humble pie…
“Barack’s presidential library could have been anywhere in the world because there are so many people who feel like he is their president.”

“New York wanted it. Hawaii wants it. Because it’s also an economic engine.”

These people just can’t give up power. That’s what this is all about.

Michelle also claimed in the same interview that whites are afraid of blacks…

Just a reminder that the Obamas live in an $8 million mansion in Kalorama, DC which is 83% white and just 3.8% black.

Michelle Obama wants Americans to think that there is still a racial divide and that whites are “still running” from minorities. She made the divisive and racist remark at the Obama Foundation Summit, held at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.

She’s using the tired cliche that “white flight” is happening in 2019 by saying that whites are “afraid of black people.” This is exactly what Democrats have done for decades to garner votes from the black community. Shame on Michelle but she just can’t help herself. She chooses to be stuck in the past and wants others in the black community to stay with the Democrats and their belief that there is a racial divide. It’s all about power and votes. Just ask Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

“I can’t make people not afraid of black people. I don’t know what’s going on, I can’t explain what’s happening in your head, but maybe if I show up every day as a human, a good human … Just maybe that work will pick away at the scabs of your discrimination.”

Nancy Pelosi Says Democrats Will Rely on Prayer to Defend the Constitution, Nearly Chokes Up

First, let’s just go over a quick run-down of why Democrats are not Christians and why we should not treat them as such. As I summarized in a previous article, If You’re a Democrat, You’re Probably Not Saved,

The Democratic party, at its core, is radically opposed to the standard of morality set forth in Scripture. Whether it be the continual expansion of the slaughtering of innocent children in the womb, the clamoring for the promotion of homosexuality and other forms of sexual perversions, including feminism, or the insistent push for redistributive theft, it goes without saying that everything the Democrat party stands for is biblically immoral. Jesus did not die for these things, he died because of these things–to free us from them.

Things like,
Abortion, the slaughter of innocent children,
gay rights, gay propaganda, “gay Christianity,”
theft (redistribution of wealth),
lawlessness (i.e. open borders),
a complete and total lack of individual responsibility (i.e. nanny state welfare system, single-payer insurance, etc.),
the endless sweeping away of our right to worship God freely.
Not to mention that the Democrat party denounced God during the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

However, Nancy Pelosi — the pro-sodomy pro-abortion Democrat leader — wants us to know that the Democrat party is going to rely on God to defend the constitution from enemies both Domestic and foreign.

Watch as she nearly chokes up saying it:

German Authorities Find ‘Weapons Of War’ During Raid Near Radical Mosque

A large arsenal of “weapons of war” was found near a radical mosque in Germany, adding to fears that terrorists are well equipped to carry out attacks across Europe.

The weapons were found in a refrigerator after a SWAT team operation in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Ismail Tipi, a local politician from the Christian Democratic Union, warned of the possibility of more Islamic State sleeper cells holding similar arsenals.
“According to my information, a weapons cache was excavated with heavy military weapons in this operation,” Tipi said in a press release Friday. “The danger of arming violent fundamentalists in Germany is very large. That makes this secret use more than clear.”

Some of the weapons used to carry out the Jan. 7, 2015 Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris came from the vast weaponry left over from the Bosnian War in the 1990s. Other busts of terrorist cells have recovered weapons from Croatia, Serbia and Slovakia — these countries are under pressure from the European Union to tighten regulations for gun sales.

“The fear is large that Salafist sleeper cells, jihadis, and ISIS terrorists in Germany get support from foreign intelligence services that are not friendly to us,” Tipi said. “We can assume that the secret arsenals for a major attack are used not only in Germany but the whole of Europe. It would be very negligent if we do not recognize this danger and don’t uncover these arsenals.”

French authorities found 334 war grade weapons and made 223 arrests during raids in the aftermath of the Nov. 13 terrorist attack in Paris. About 160 suspicious mosques have or will be closed for radical activities in the country.
